Shorter University Planning for Construction of New Student Residence Facility

Shorter University is working with architects to develop plans for a 100-bed
student residence facility. The facility will provide much-needed student
living space for the university.

"Shorter University has had tremendous growth, and in the fall of 2011, our
record enrollment included approximately 120 students who wanted to live on
campus that we were unable to accommodate with on-campus housing," said Dr.
Don Dowless, university president. "The student experience is enriched by
being part of the campus community, and we are excited that this new
construction will allow us to have even more of our student population
reside in our Christ-centered campus environment."

A team from Atlanta-based architectural firm Cooper Carry is working to
develop plans for the building; architects involved in the project are Tim
Fish, Lyle Green, and David Goodman. Allen Hornback of Marietta-based ADE
Builders is serving as contractor for the construction project.

The building will be located behind the Sheffield-Thompson Building between
the Newman Hall and Hazel Eubanks Hall residence facilities.

A groundbreaking will be held in the near future, and the university plans
to have the facility completed for use during the fall semester.

GNTC selected Hellen Conally as 2012 EAGLE

The 2012 EAGLE selection committee is proud to announce that Hellen Conally, Walker County, has been chosen to represent Georgia Northwestern Technical College at this year's EAGLE Leadership Institute in Atlanta.

Conally was chosen from a field of six other Exceptional Adult Georgians in Literacy Education (EAGLEs) to attend this year's event.

Conally came to the Adult Education Center in Rossville because she needed her high school equivalency diploma (GED®) in order to continue her work with children. She is currently enrolled as a student at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. Her ultimate goal is to earn a bachelors degree in Elementary Education. She has explained that her goals became bigger when she earned her GED Diploma.

At the EAGLE Leadership Institute, Conally, and her nominating instructor, Marianne Weddle, will attend workshops and training sessions focused on increasing leadership, communication, and life management skills. The event is also designed to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of each of the EAGLE delegates.

The EAGLE program is designed to spotlight adults who have used the opportunities provided by adult education to move forward with their education. All EAGLES (Exceptional Adult Georgians in Literacy Education) serve as ambassadors for the adult education programs they attended. The Leadership Institute provides further training in enhancing the effective use of adult education to further personal growth, educational attainment, safe and stable families, economic development, and community involvement.

Susan Gilbert Harvey is a native of Rome, Georgia, although many of her Harbin and Shelor ancestors lived in Calhoun. Harvey spent 30 years as a visual artist before she inherited the 1898 Paris journal of her great-aunt, Anna McNulty Lester (1862-1900). Anna's life as an art student in Montparnasse enticed Harvey to walk in her great-aunt's Paris footsteps in 1998.

The story of Anna and Edith Lester (Susan's grandmother) continues in POSTMARKS: the summers of '98.

Susan Harvey's books appeal to artists, writers, and travelers. She shares humorous stories of her life as a sculptor, and her 19th Century ancestors inspire readers to embark on their own creative adventures.

The show will feature artists, fine crafters, and handmade food products. All items will be handcrafted or homegrown in Georgia.

The event is free for attendees and will take place on Saturday, March 31 from 10am-5pm and Sunday, April 1 from 11am-4pm. The Rome Civic Center is located at 402 Civic Center Drive adjacent to the Rome - Floyd Visitor Center.

The Market is sponsored by the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Last Stop Gift Shop.

The spring event will build on the success of the Winter Art Market held December 2-3, 2011 in Rome. The Winter Art Market featured over 45 artists and welcomed nearly 1,000 patrons to the free event.

RFPRA to Host Roman Team Challenge Gymnastics Meet Jan 7

The Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority is hosting the First Annual Roman Team Challenge Gymnastics Meet this Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the RFPRA Gymnastics Center.

This event will host 167 gymnasts spanning from ages 6 to 17 competing from Level 2 to Level 10 of AAU and USAG. This meet draws participants from southeastern states who will begin arriving this Friday to prepare for the meet.

Head Coach Matt Zollitsch, responsible for coordinating the meet stated, "The new gymnastics facility and the growth of our team gymnastics program has enabled us to host our first ever gymnastics meet. I am excited to have such strong participation in our first year."

The highest scoring team will win the Roman Team Trophy and free entry into next year's meet. This meet helps gymnasts achieve qualifying scores for state titles.

The meet will begin Saturday, January 7 at 8 am and run into the late evening. It will be held at the RFPRA Gymnastics Center located at 1 Shorter Avenue in Rome, Georgia. Admission is $5 for ages 6 and up.

Rome Little Theatre holds 'Glass Menagerie' auditions

Media release: Rome Little Theatre will hold auditions for its production of "The Glass Menagerie" on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. and Monday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. at the historic DeSoto Theatre in downtown Rome. Participants should arrive early for registration and also hold Tuesday, Jan. 10 for callbacks.

"The Glass Menagerie" is Tennessee Williams' memory play about a mother, Amanda Wingfield (age 45 to 60), who lives in the past but is desperate to see her children happy and especially to find a suitor for Laura, her daughter. Laura (age 25 to 30) is a fragile young woman who lives in an isolated world symbolized by her treasured glass figurines. Her brother, Tom (age 28 to 35), is the narrator of the play who works to support his family but dreams of escaping the burdens of his home life. Tom's high school friend, Jim O'Connor (age 28 to 38), embodies Amanda's dream for her daughter.

There are four roles available for the characters mentioned above. No experience is required; Rome Little Theatre is a community theater that depends on volunteers for the stage and offstage from all walks of life and with all levels of experience in the theater.

The production will run April 20 to 29 with Friday and Saturday evening shows and Sunday matinees. Actors who are cast must also be available for school shows during the morning and early afternoon of April 10 and 11.

Media release: Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation will present a live radio broadcast of the classic holiday story, "A Christmas Carol," on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 2:30 p.m. at the historic DeSoto Theatre on Broad Street in downtown Rome. The show is presented in partnership with WLAQ and 95.7 The Ridge and will be broadcast on those stations live at 2:30 p.m.

The show will feature local children and teenagers bringing the story's characters to life as well as live sound effects, Christmas carols, and old-style radio commercials. Community members may participate in this special Christmas event as a member of the live audience at the theater during the broadcast. Tickets for the show are available at the RLT box office. Adult tickets are $10, and students, seniors, and groups of 10 or more are $8.

This production is a unique opportunity for families to enjoy "A Christmas Carol" together at home and for the community to see firsthand how a live radio broadcast is organized and accomplished.

This radio broadcast and stage presentation will benefit the Alzheimer's Association, the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation, and Rome Little Theatre.

Media release: Rome Little Theatre is now accepting applications for directors and producers for the 2012-2013 season. Applicants may complete an application at romelittletheatre.com and either print and mail it to the theater (P.O. Box 1063, Rome, 30162) or submit the application by e-mail. Applications are also available at the RLT office, located in the DeSoto Theater at 530 Broad Street in downtown Rome. The deadline to submit an application is Dec. 15.

Directors and producers should have some theater or theater-related directing or producing experience. Prospective directors must have directed a show or served as an assistant director (for RLT or another similar organization) in order to be eligible to direct a production at RLT.

Auditions for 'A Christmas Carol' radio show Nov. 22

Media release: Rome Little Theatre will hold auditions for its radio broadcast of the classic holiday story, "A Christmas Carol," on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the historic DeSoto Theatre on Broad St. in downtown Rome. Auditions are open to students ages 10 to 19 only. Registration will open at 6 p.m., and auditions will begin at 6:30 p.m. Participants do not need to prepare a piece in advance.

"A Christmas Carol" is sponsored by WLAQ and 95.7 The Ridge. The show will be broadcast on Sunday, Dec. 18, and tickets will be sold for an audience to enjoy the show live at the theater while it is being broadcast. Rehearsals for this show will include three Saturday rehearsals during the day and tech week rehearsals from Dec. 13 to 17.

This radio broadcast and stage presentation will benefit the Alzheimer's Foundation, the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation, and Rome Little Theatre.

The 2011 National Honor Society induction was held Wednesday at 8:00 AM in the Chapel area of Upper Campus. This is the third year for Unity Christian School to have a National Honor Society. The object of the chapter is to create a desire for scholarship, to stimulate an enthusiasm for service to others, to encourage the development of character, to bring out the qualities of leadership, and most importantly, to bring honor and glory to God. To be eligible for membership in the Unity Christian School Chapter, a student must be in grades 10, 11, or 12 and must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20.

Unity Christian School's Fine Arts Department Presents "A Picture Postcard Christmas"

The Unity Christian School Fine Arts Department will present residents of the Rome community with an early Christmas gift to be "unwrapped" on Saturday, November 19 at the Rome City Auditorium at 10:00 a.m.

The "gift" is an invitation to attend a musical entitled, A Picture Postcard Christmas. According to Jeff Cavaness, director of the production and high school drama teacher, "Our production includes some 200 UCS students, ranging from grades 2 through 12 as well as faculty and staff." Cynthia Ivery, director of the Fine Arts department at Unity Christian School, explains that the purpose of the musical is for cast and guests alike to worship our "Audience of One", Jesus Christ. "Much of our Christmas tradition and nostalgia points to the nature of God the Father and offers us a revelation of who Jesus Christ is", said Ivery. The theme centers around a grandmother who is sharing with her four grandchildren the memories of her own Christmas traditions, which offers her the opportunity to remind the children of who Jesus was and is. The show is interspersed with dancing, skits, dramatic readings, and musical numbers, including the sixth grade chorus singing Agnus Dei Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

In addition, the visual arts department will showcase original Christmas themed artwork throughout the city auditorium.

"Admission is complimentary to the public. We are grateful for any donations, which will benefit the UCS Fine Arts Department," said Cavaness. For more information contact Cynthia Ivery at civery@unitychristianschool.org.

Mount Berry Square starts $5,000 contest for schools, based on purchases there

Media release: "Giving Back to School" is an incentive program designed to benefit local schools through cash awards. Students, families, friends and educators are all encouraged to shop Mount Berry Square Mall and apply their store receipts to their favorite participating school. Schools will receive one point for every dollar spent at Mount Berry Square Mall. The school with the highest point total at the end of the program wins the grand prize - $5,000 cash!

Shoppers simply make a purchase at any store or food court restaurant in Mount Berry Square Mall beginning November 12, 2011 through April 30, 2012. Schools will receive credit points when mall shoppers bring their original receipts to the Mount Berry Square Mall Guest Services Center during mall hours. A Guest Services representative will record the purchase and stamp the receipt.

In addition to the $5,000 Grand Prize, awards will also be made to second and third place winners in the amount of $2,500 and $1,250 respectively. The total receipts for each participating school will be posted every Monday by noon on the mall website. There is no deadline for schools to register, but the sooner they do, the faster they start earning points. Schools must reach a minimum point balance of 5,000 by January 31, 2012 in order to remain in the program.

Public & Officials Invited to RFPRA Dedication Ceremony

The Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority invites local officials and the public for the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony of the new RFPRA Administrative Offices and Gymnastics Center on Friday, November 18, 2011 at 12 noon.

The 2006 SPLOST package allocated $1,600,000 to renovate the Marine Armory into offices for the RFPRA Administrative Headquarters. The renovation also added a state-of-the-art gymnastics facility complete with two in-ground pits, one channel pit bar, uneven bars with resi mats, in-ground tumble trak, separate recreational and competitive equipment, and all the standard gymnastics and tumbling equipment. The facility also features a parent's viewing area spanning the width of the gym with access to a sibling play room. The center is complete with a party room that offers great views of the gymnastics facility.

A bronze plaque was purchased to recognize the individuals responsible for the planning, management and fulfillment of the SPLOST project as well as the Marine Corps building history.

All are encouraged to attend the celebratory dedication. The facility is located at 1 Shorter Ave in Rome, Georgia.

Loudermilk's 'Foundations of Freedom' Program coming to Rome

State Senator Barry Loudermilk will be at Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church on Friday night and Saturday morning, presenting ' Foundations of Freedom.' This two-part program reveals the true faith and philosophy of America's Founding Fathers, by exploring the words and original intent of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

By integrating inspirational stories of our Founding Fathers with a systematic analysis of our founding documents, Barry reveals the character of the men who struggled to form 'a more perfect union.'

Loudermilk has been presenting the' Foundations of Freedom' around the Southeast since earlier this year, and Rome will be the final program for this year. "We have been overwhelmed with the positive response of those who have attended our programs," Loudermilk said. "We have worked hard to make the program entertaining as well as educational, and the people have been very receptive."

Because of the growing demand for his speaking on American history; Loudermilk has formed Firm Reliance, Inc. a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating Americans on their true heritage.

Part one of the program will be from 6:30pm to 9:00pm on Friday, November 11, 2011. Part two will be from 9:00am until 12:30pm on Saturday, November 12, 2011. The program is open to everyone and there is no charge to attend.

Nov. 12: Classic Cinema features Gone with Wind

Media release: The Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation's Classic Cinema Series presents Gone With the Wind on Saturday Nov. 12 at 1:30pm and 7pm. Admission is $5 per person. A Special VIP Event: Dinner and a Movie, will accompany the 7pm. screening with a "Traditional Southern-Style Dinner" at the Partridge Restaurant at 5:30 p.m. An elegant four-course dinner will be served family style and will include Southern cocktails Mint Juleps and Scarlet O'Hara's.

A creative menu incorporates the movie's characters. It includes Fried Green Tomatoes with Aunt Pittypat's Remoulade Sauce and Prissy's Cheese Straws as appetizers, and Big Sam's Old Time Potato Soup and Confederate Cornbread as starters. Three entrees will be brought to the table: Ashley Wilkes' Shrimp and Grits, Pork's Stuffed and Roasted Plantation Pork Loin, and Mammy's Southern Fried Chicken. Among the vegetables and side dishes are Rhett's Roasted Red Potatoes, Bonnie Blue Butler's Broccoli Casserole, Melanie's Macaroni and Cheese, Yankee Green Beans, and Tara's Fresh Asparagus. Dessert includes Scarlett's Red Velvet Cake, Uncle Peter's Pear Cobbler, and Belle's Banana Pudding.

VIP Tickets are $75 per person. VIP Guests will enjoy cocktails and dinner at the Partridge Restaurant, a coupon for a downtown Rome carriage ride by Antebellum Carriage Services, reserved seating at the theatre, and wine and beer during movie and intermission. Regular admission guests will be able to purchase wine and beer before the show and during intermission, and will be able to ride the Antebellum Carriage starting at 4pm. Charges for the rides are $5.00 for adults and $2.50 for children over 8. Children under 8 are free.

Tickets are on now on sale at the Historic DeSoto Theatre Box Office, online at www.desototickets.com, or by calling (706)295-7171. Season memberships and sponsorships are also still available. All proceeds from the Classic Cinema series and events will support the Foundation's efforts to preserve the Historic DeSoto Theatre.

Gone With the Wind is the 1939 American historical epic film adapted from Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer-winning 1936 novel. It tells the story of the American Civil War and Reconstruction era from a Southern point of view, featuring film stars Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.
Other movies that will be shown from December through March as part of the Classic Cinema Series are: The Grinch (Dec. 17), Titanic (Jan 14), The Wizard of Oz (Feb. 18), and Saturday Night Fever (March 31).

Media release: Saturday, Oct. 29, was the official National Day of Service for all Exchange Clubs across America. The goal is for each Exchange Club to select a community project and work on that project on the same day. This year, the National Day of Service was Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, and the Exchange Club of Rome partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Rome and Floyd County. Says Tom Sills, Rome Exchangite and Board Chair for Habitat, "We are very thankful for the many members of the Rome Exchange Club who gave up their Saturday morning to help Habitat. A lot was accomplished in getting the site ready for its eventual renovation as a Habitat home. The work of the Exchange Club of Rome is helping to provide another deserving partner family decent, safe and affordable shelter in Floyd County."

Floyd dietitians' Food Day helps Action Ministries in Rome

Media release: Floyd Medical Center's dietitians joined with the Northwest Georgia Dietetic Association to celebrate Food Day last week with a food collection for the food pantries operated by Action Ministries-Rome. Floyd employees were given the opportunity to donate food items at three locations. Employees who donated food were eligible to win a $50 gift certificate donated by Morrison's, operator of the All Spice Café at Floyd Medical Center. Floyd employees donated 404 food items, which the nutrition professionals then delivered to the Action Ministries-Rome food pantry on East 19th Street this week.

Becky Laurens, director of the Floyd Center for Wound Care and Hyperbarics, was the lucky winner of the gift certificate.
